SEAMLESS and interactive LIVE SHOPPING

E-commerce

After becoming huge in Asia, shoppable video is now on the minds of retailers and commerce platforms around the world. If you’re planning to launch shoppable video, social platforms like Instagram and Tik Tok come to mind. But when investigating further, many companies discover they have requirements these platforms can’t be delivered. Integration with existing apps and backends, lower costs per unit sold or access to customer data are all areas of concern. And of course, end users expect to have a fun, engaging and uninterrupted shopping experience. Another example is Ali Gala, a cutting edge, massive scale live, interactive shopping gala in China.

With Livery it’s seamless to join a live feed, casually discovering a product on air followed by ordering and paying it. Low latency, sync and several standard interactive commerce features allow you to easily add game mechanics, run auctions or time limited items and much, much more. With Livery, anyone can enter the future of online shopping.

During their frequent live shows about technology, cosmetics, toys, etc, products are reviewed and promoted. The viewers are able to acquire products directly from the video stream.

All on-stream data and visualisations is provided by Livery’s Interaction engine and Livery’s syncing technology keeps the video and interactions perfectly in sync for the best possible shopping experience for the thousands of viewers that join in during a session.

eLuscious - De Wijnbeurs

De Wijnbeurs, one of eLuscious leading e-commerce brands in the Benelux, organised the National Wine Quiz in November’21. Consumers were able to order their wine tasting box with six (blinded) tubes prior to the live event. The quiz was a  livestream, presented by two well-known hosts (TV presenter Astrid Joosten and radio DJ Sven Ornelis) and with two teams in the studio battling to win. People at home could also participate by answering questions about the wines they were tasting as well as wine-related knowledge-based questions. The live show lasted for more than 1.5 hours, with over 2.300 people participating.

The Livery platform was used for low-latency streaming and for adding interactive layers on top of the stream. De Wijnbeurs used the Core and gamification interactions to create the quiz with all the trivia questions, and the leaderboard to create some extra excitement and to show the prizewinners at the end of the game show. Via the commerce interaction it is possible to directly order the wines in the webshop. Or order them later when the show is finished.

Hobbii

Hobbii, the Danish one-stop-shop for yarn lovers, started offering free-to-play bingo games to its community in order to drive engagement and to offer ‘Super Deals’. Each week, a live online bingo show is available in the Hobbii app where thousands of simultaneous players could win prizes from the Hobbii store like yarn bags, wool or knitting needles.

The weekly Bingo sessions last about 40-minutes and consist of a livestream of the host presenting the game and an overlay showing the Bingo cards. Hobbii is using Livery’s streaming platform to stream these sessions at low-latency.

Due to the success in Denmark, Hobbii has expanded the live online Bingo sessions to Germany, the US and the UK, leveraging the scaling power of Livery.

Cool things others have done

Ali Gala Alibaba’s 11.11 (Global Shopping Festival)

Livery makes it possible to launch live video commerce events like only the big guys did before. The success of large companies working with interactive video has come within reach of smaller sized SME’s. Take Alibaba, Since 2009 the company is monetizing the concept of an annual Shopping Festival. Over the years, it turned a 1-day festival for singles’s to buy something for themselves on Single’s Day (Nov 11) to an international shopping festival with a 3-day window.

Each year, the event kicks off with the Ali Gala, featuring artists like Pharell, Katy Perry and Taylor Swift. In 2020, 11.11 broke all records with a Gross Merchandise Value (total turnover) of U$ 74B (yes: billions, that is!).

Key of “Double Eleven” is the combination of live entertainment (artist performances, fashion shows, games, etc) with interactivity, offering viewers a seamless entertainment experience with the option to buy the products featured in a show or endorsed by celebrities.

Alibaba truly is one of the frontrunners if it comes to Interactive video. By adding e-commerce overlays on top of live streams, Alibaba enables consumers to buy products instantly. Innovation is a key driver in keeping the viewers surprised year on year: whether it’s about offering mini-games which can be played to earn discounts or the innovative user interfaces (scan a QR code, just shake with your phone and the product is ordered).

Alibaba is one the largest B2C companies in China and therefore could permit it to develop all technology required in-house (mostly). However, with Livery, live video commerce events come within reach of smaller-sized companies as well. It combines both low-latency video, synchronicity and interactivity (e.g. a Buy Button or Add-to-Cart Button) all in one. Alibaba has shown the way, are you next?

If there’s one type of content that needs low latency video, this is it! Livery offers standard tools to quickly build your own – or you can work with your development team using our API’s. If you’re thinking about launching your own trivia or game show app, or want to revive a classic format, Livery is here to help.

Dutch Dance Quiz

In cooperation with Creative agency First Day of Spring we streamed 3 episodes of the Dutch Dance Quiz, a video event that took viewers on a trip down memory lane through the rich 30 years of Dutch dance music. The quiz could be watched at dutchdancequiz.nl and TV 538. Dance fans tested their knowledge by playing along via an interactive 2nd screen (mobile phone or tablet), to have a chance to win exclusive Dutch Dance prizes. A panel with dance industry legends like Dano, The Darkraver, Roog and Michel de Hey played along from the green room. Martin Garrix, Joris Voorn, Chuckie and Erick E popped questions to the viewers.

Livery powered the video end-to-end, based on an on-premise encoder and a web player used on the DDQ website. This turned out to be very effective for sponsors Nationale Nederland and Philips, as the project won gold in the category ‘specialised sponsor platform’ at the annual Sponsorringen event.

Lift Kvis

Lift Kvis is a popular live game show app for the Eastern European market. 4 times a week thousands of players join in to win real cash money prizes. And Livery joined to provide a secure and stable streaming solution.

The Lift Kvis game show is a perfect example of a full feedback loop, which is a powerful tool during live streams. The host asks the trivia question delivered by Livery’s Ultra Low Latency video and the viewers are able to directly answer the question. Viewer information and game stats are provided in real-time to the autocue of the host, who can respond based on the actions of the viewers and anything remarkable, as it happens.

Business events

Due to COVID19, thousands of events moved online by necessity. What felt strange at first has become the new normal and here to stay. But a simple live stream no longer cuts it for professionals that now spent hours a day immersed in video calls and content. Livery is proud to power a new breed of live business sessions that go way beyond a standard webinar: real time feedback, engaging remote teams, stimulating participation with game mechanics, live Q&A and more. These practices are here to stay!

Live Legends

Long term Livery customer Live Legends participated in the Livery Interactive early access program. Based on the customer’s feedback the Livery team created a stats API, exposing interaction data in real time. This data is injected in real time into the virtual studio rendered using the Unreal Engine.

The data generated by the viewers of the live stream had a direct impact on the visual appearances of the ultra-low latency live stream. For example fireworks are triggered in the video feed when more than 100 viewers voted YES.

Horecava Live tasting event

In 2021, Horecava ( the largest Food & Beverage trade show in The Netherlands) launched the online Horecava Tastings: a live, interactive tasting experience with participants tasting real products from their tasting box (which participants ordered online and which was delivered to their homes). All boxes available were sold out in one day. A great example of how to go beyond a simple live stream.

During the online tasting event, a presenter guided participants through the product tasting and asked the viewers questions about these products. The audience also could rate all products and participate in a trivia quiz with prizes. All data was stored and was used afterwards to identify potential customers for the virtual exhibitors.

This is how the future of online events will look like, if we can help it.

SELECT, REACT AND ENJOY

OTT & Social video

TV withstood disruption longer than other media industries. But with the rise of Netflix, Amazon Prime and Disney+, many channels ask themselves what they can do to differentiate, as do new entrants looking for a niche to explore. Live content and rights, e.g. sports, is more valuable than ever. Audience engagement is another way to stay relevant. And instead of shoveling your content to 3rd party social video platforms, now it’s easier than ever to keep things under your own roof and start streaming, augmenting and monetizing content on your terms, on any of your owned and operated sites and apps.

An idea to consider

Social streaming

What’s next? Next to the major streaming platforms like Twitch and Youtube live, smaller platforms oriented to a specific niche market will become more common. This has to do with organisations like Livery who are able to provide all necessary building blocks for a social streaming platform. Allowing the customers to focus on the best possible experience for their target audience, without thinking about technical challenges around video delivery or the necessary cloud encoding framework.

Within a view clicks, Livery’s video platform is combined with his interaction platform. Allowing our customers to features we know from the major platforms (Twitch, Facebook or Instagram live) like; Chat, Live Reactions, Polls and more to their platform.

The open API allows customers to build their own front-end experience and control Livery’s backend the way they think would be best.

SYNC & REGULATIONS

News & finance

In this 24/7 world, having instant access to breaking news and finance updates is crucial for professionals anywhere. A particular area where low latency and sync matter is finance – you want to prevent that any user has an unfair advantage by being able to access crucial info before everybody else.

Bank of England

“The UK’s financial watchdog has launched an investigation into a security breach at the Bank of England that allowed Flash traders to get an 8-second head start due to an insecure audio feed of Mark Carney’s market-moving press conferences.” Source: The Guardian

Livery to the rescue! Security is key for many live streaming use-cases. Content providers need to be able to rely on their video solution to deliver live video at a set latency across platforms and conditions. When trading, money or prizes are involved, a group of savvy viewers will always try to get a leg up on other people. Livery created a solution for Bank of England to level the playing field and prevent premature “leaks”, by encrypting the video buffer on the end-user’s device while maintaining a fixed latency. Fairness and transparency guaranteed.

SHOW ME THE MONEY

Betting & gambling

In betting and gambling, time is of the essence. But more importantly, to ensure fair play everybody needs to have access to the same information at the same time. You can’t afford your stream to be out of sync on different devices.

An idea to consider

The future is here. For online betting applications the latency is important, but more important is capability to encrypt the video buffer on the end-users device.

Livery’s syncing technology is able to direct all users to the same video chunk at the same time and the encrypted buffer prevents any hackers from accessing the video information before any of the other players can.

The ULL-CMAF based video technology allows betting companies to scale thousands (or millions) of concurrent players globally. The high-quality video stream brings the casino experience to his or her mobile device like never before.

Cool things others have done

Formula 1

Sports, low latency and interactivity work well together. One of the best examples and a platform we admire is F1TV. It lets you watch the F1 race in multiple ways and thanks to additional interactive features, you’re able to switch cameras or watch multiple cameras at the same time. Player startup time and syncing are key requirements to accommodate a feature like this that works perfectly.

An interactive layer on top of the video stream, allows you to pull up statistical data about the race in general or specific racers in the field. The use of multiple audio tracks (languages) make the product accessible for a wide range of viewers located in multiple countries. The rich viewing experience, as provided by F1TV is not limited to Formula 1 racing, but should be an example for all sports out there. Especially eSports, where data and video feeds can be provided directly from the game engine.

If, like us, you’re inspired by F1, we hope you let us know. With Livery, it’s now simpler than every to launch low latency, interactive live streaming. Any league, club or network can start small and grow to any capacity it fans will take it.
